Default Prophecies only Help!

My brother and I are starting to play GW. We Only have Prophecies and are not planning on getting any of the other two campagins since all we want to do is know the game in preparation for GW2. We dont have EoTN either.

Question is, we like to play ''solo'' using henchmen and only us two. What two proffesion combinations are good for this? What builds would you recommend we look forward to as we develop in the game, using only prophecies and core skills. Any tips?

There is really no "preparation" for GW2 other than getting to know more about the lore and the type of play. So best you can do is just try out different professions, enjoy the missions and don't rush ahead.

If this is your first time you play, I recommend you start with something easy like Elementalist. They're really powerful and very easy to play in the beginning, although they lose power once the game gets harder. Rangers and warriors are also fairly straightforward. I would suggest one of you taking a monk as healer if you're going to rely a lot on henchmen. Along the way you might also want to consider EotN to gain heroes which will make the game a lot less easier. But don't rush it, just try enjoy the game and you can start think about it after you passed Lion's Arch, earliest place to get into EotN from Prophecies. Whatever you do, avoid the temptation of getting runs, you'll miss out a lot including a lot of free skills from skillquests.

If it's your 1st play through, go with something like an Ele (as Bristlebane stated). Even a War or Monk are relatively easy to learn to play.
Also, EotN is like $10 nowadays? Defiantly worth the cost if you think of all the content you get. Nice bunch of heroes, Some fun PvE skills and some more armor available. Also, if your playing GW in preparation for GW2 then EotN further helps b/c you can put items/titles in your HoM.

As others have said, I think you're missing out without EotN -- in gameplay as well as story. North is the most tied in with aspects of Prophecies' storyline, and GW2 will definitely draw on aspects, storylines, and races encountered in North.

It's a shame you couldn't have started out with the Platinum Edition. It's currently around $10 from Amazon. If you feel you want to spring for it, you can add the key to your existing account. The Prophecies portion of the key will be unnoticeably redundant, but the North part will be added as if you'd bought it alone. It'd probably be cheaper than buying North on its own.

As for characters for you guys to play, one of you should really consider either Monk or even Elementalist -- ele can easily go damage or support, even healing with that large energy pool. One of you could also consider minion master Necromancer. Although you don't have natural access to the Aura of the Lich skill until much later in the campaign, some quick PVP simulation via Isle of the Nameless or Zaishen Challenge and/or Elite could earn you the Balthazar faction to unlock it early with a tome. The effectiveness of a minion meat shield army really can't be appreciated until experienced.

I disagree with a lot of people in this thread saying one of your should be a Monk. The henchman monk is sufficient, and will possibly be better than a human who doesn't really know what's going on.

I'd advise anything other than Monk or Mesmer. They're all pretty straightforward. Ideally someone plays a Warrior to keep the frontline sorted, but it isn't necessary.

I started playing the game as a monk and I enjoyed it. In the end you're best of trying a bit of all professions and pick what seems the most fun, then you complement with henchmen and later possible heroes as well. Mesmer is probably one of the harder and more unappreciated classes, but with some upcoming mesmer changes it could become much more respected.

Thats the difficult thing about the games. All 3 main games seem to have completely separate storylines, but they all tie together at the end in EotN.

If you want to play it just for lore, then you will have to either play through all 4 games or read up on Wiki for the missing games if you want the complete story including insights as to why you are doing the various things in Prophecies.

I think Prophecies + EotN is all you need in the beginning. Factions and Nightfall are not really needed except for more skills and heroes. But there's plenty to enjoy in Prophecies first.

Almost any profession combo would work. You can often use henchmen to fill in whatever roles you need.
However, one "build" that is very useful, but not available from henchmen is the Minion Master. MM is a Necro build based around creating lots of minions. So, it might be good if one of you is a Necro.
All classes, including Necro, can fill several different roles, so a Necro is not limited to being an MM. By using Templates you can also switch roles very easily, so you need not be concerned about tying any class down to a specific build.

P.s - I'd agree with the rest - if you are interested in the lore leading into GW2, you should get EotN.
